A big thank you to all the Church members who helped to prepare our students – Iris, Lisa, Pat, Sandy, Ken, and Tracy. Thank you to the music from the church choir and organist, Gary. A huge thank you to Father Peter for a wonderful ceremony filled with the grace of God.  The gifts that they received will be with them for their entire lives.

A big thank you also to the families who supported their children through this important sacrament and the staff of the school who helped along the way!

We would also like to wish Father Peter a Happy Birthday today!

Youth Impact Survey Wants to Hear from You!

The Youth Impact Survey has been extended to Friday, June 9th.

Youth in Waterloo Region between the ages 9 and 18 have the opportunity to participate in the Youth Impact Survey.  The Youth Impact Survey was developed in partnership WITH young people in Waterloo Region and asks well-being questions on a variety of topics.

Last summer, the Children and Youth Planning Table, UNICEF Canada, the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation partnered to run the pilot version of the Youth Impact Survey in Waterloo Region.  The survey included questions about belonging, mental and emotional health, security, protection and other topics.  Waterloo Region was the first community in Canada to test out the survey and after getting feedback from the youth who filled it out in 2020, and with a new partner, KW Community Foundation, the survey is running again.

Phase 2 of the Youth Impact Survey includes Waterloo Region and 3 other communities in Canada.  (Ottawa, Halton, and Tri-Counties in Nova Scotia).  In order for the survey to be a success, Waterloo Region needs 1000 youth aged 9 – 18 to fill it out and the results will help inform the decisions made about programs, services, and supports available to young people.  This is an opportunity for young people to feel valued, heard and included.

The 20-30 minute survey is totally voluntary and anonymous and youth who fill it out will receive volunteer hours and a chance to win prizes.

Click here for more information and the survey.

Weekly Updates: May 29-June 2

Good Evening Tornado Families:

We will be entering our final month of the school year this week, and we have many activities to round out the school year! Please save the date as our CSAC team will be hosting a Family Bar-B-Q on June 20th; more information will be shared in the next couple of weeks as the team finalizes details.

We wish our Confirmands all the best as they celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation this Tuesday at the Church. This is an important milestone in the lives of our Catholic students.

On Thursday, June 1st, St. Teresa of Avila School and all schools in the WCDSB will raise the Pride Flag again. The flag-raising is part of our commitment to creating a nurturing, safe and inclusive learning environment where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected. We stand with all in our community, and we commit to doing better – each and every day.

June is also National Indigenous History Month. As a community, we have worked throughout the year to deepen our understanding of the role we must take in recognizing our impact on our Indigenous brothers and sisters and our part in promoting truth and reconciliation. Our journey will continue throughout the month.

This Friday, WCDSB is proud to acknowledge Educational Assistants and Child Youth Care Workers Day.  This day is devoted to appreciating, celebrating, and honouring the daily impact they make on student success.  Please join us in celebrating EA/CYCW Appreciation Day by letting our team here at St. Teresa of Avila know how important they are to us. Friday is also a Professional Development Day for our staff, so there is no school for our students. Extended Day will be operating.

Math Parent Survey K-8

Schools offer a variety of opportunities for parents to learn more about how to support their children: for example, events related to mathematics may be held at the school (e.g., family math nights); teachers may provide newsletters or communicate with parents through apps or social media; and school or board websites may provide helpful tips about how parents can engage in their child’s mathematics learning outside of school and may even provide links where they can learn more or enjoy math activities together.

The following brief survey will assist our school district in gathering data about how parents/families feel informed about what their children are learning in math, about how parents/families feel about supporting their children’s learning in math, and about parental access to math learning resources at home.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation.

The Umbrella Project – Integrity

Use a digital contract to teach and reinforce online integrity

As parents, we all feel the impact that the digital world is having on our children’s well-being. Far from innocuous, technology comes with a very complicated list of pros and cons that we are only beginning to understand. Parenting our children in this changing landscape is a challenge we are all navigating.

When it comes to integrity, technology is creating a huge playground for practicing this skill.  From apps that allow us to share whatever we want anonymously (and therefore without consequence) to the changing landscape of online academics that provide more opportunities for cheating, our children are facing these difficult questions of integrity more and more frequently.

So where can we start to make a difference in the choices our children are making online? Cat Coode, founder of Binary Tattoo, recommends starting with a digital contract that you review every year. Digital contracts should open the conversation about integrity online and outline:

— The family rules about technology – both for parents and the technology user. I.e.: user privacy vs. parent access to the device, situations/locations where the device can/cannot be used,

— Clear “do’s” and “don’ts” for safety and well-being ie. bullying, talking to strangers online, photos etc.

— Consequences for breaching the contract

— Costs and responsibilities for device

I recommend checking out Cat’s sample contract and blog here.

I hope it goes well!

Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project

The Umbrella Project – Integrity

Respond consistently to behaviour that lacks integrity

One of the first things I realized after becoming a parent was that it is impossible to control children’s behaviour with threats or anger but consistency goes a long way in creating the boundaries for healthy and respectful actions. Once you have established the values that matter to your child and your family, respond with consistency when reinforcing them. Dishonest and disrespectful behaviour often fall into this category. Listen and respect your child as they explain their behaviour and provide information about why this isn’t acceptable behaviour in your family, with friends or in their communities. Consequences of this type of behaviour should be clear, predictable and reinforced.

When your children are young, the consequences for not using integrity and honesty are smaller but as they get older the stakes get higher. Most children will test the boundaries of dishonesty, irresponsibility and disrespect as a normal part of learning about the world and their role in it. When we teach integrity and consistently reinforce that there are consequences of not using this important skill from an early age, it helps our children make informed choices about how to identify positive values and live in a way that matches these values.

Learn how to be consistent with behaviour that lacks integrity.

Until next time,

Dr. Jen, The Umbrella Project
