Monthly Archives: March 2024

Happy Easter!

The staff at St. Teresa of Avila school would like to wish you a very Happy Easter!

We hope you have time over the long weekend to experience the Paschal Mystery: the opportunity to serve others, as Jesus did on Holy Thursday; the ability to “let go” of those things that are holding us back, as Jesus did on Good Friday; the opportunity to practice patience, as the disciples did on Holy Saturday; and, of course, the extreme JOY that we know is coming on Easter Sunday.

We look forward to seeing all of you back on Tuesday, April 2, 2024!

Happy Easter Tornados!

Weekly Update ~ March 25-29

“We adore you, and we bless you, Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all the churches which are in the whole world because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.”

Happy Sunday, Tornado Families:

Congratulations to our students who competed in the Grade 4-6 Spring 2024 French Impromptu Speech Contest. We would like to recognize William in Grade 4, Lavanya in Grade 5, and Libby in Grade 6 for placing in the competition. Way to go, Tornados!

This week, we partake in the holiest of times: Holy Week. Today is Palm Sunday, which begins our journey toward Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday, we recall Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the welcoming and waving of palm branches by the people. Palm Sunday is a reminder to welcome Jesus into our lives, into our hearts, and into our homes. We wish you a beautiful Palm Sunday and a reflective and prayerful Holy Week. Mrs. Hartmann’s grade 7 class, under the guidance of Madame, is busy preparing for the premiere of their Passion Play, which is this Thursday, March 28th, at the Church. All are welcome.

Our school Dance-A-Thon fundraiser has begun! All donations and purchases of food and glow items can be found through School Cash Online! If you see family next weekend, it’s a great way to fundraise for our school. The money raised goes towards items and events for the students. We need to replace classroom recess equipment due to wear and tear and loss. We are slowly replacing the chairs parents sit on during school events as the wooden ones are splintering and breaking. We are still adding to our gym equipment inventory, just to name a few initiatives.

PA Day – April 8

Please note that the Professional Activity (PA) Day, initially set for April 19, 2024, has been rescheduled to April 8, 2024. This adjustment is to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff due to the Total Solar Eclipse expected on April 8, 2024.

It is important to remember that directly observing the Sun can lead to severe eye injuries, particularly during a solar eclipse.

For safe observation of a solar eclipse, it’s essential to use eye protection specifically designed for this purpose (conforming to the ISO 12312-2 standard). Regular sunglasses do not offer adequate protection for your eyes. Moreover, attempting to view any phase of a solar eclipse through the camera of a smartphone, a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without attaching a special solar filter to the front of the device can result in significant eye damage.

Total Solar Eclipse Safety Tips

A total solar eclipse is a rare and exciting natural phenomenon. However, it is crucial to view it safely to prevent any damage to the eyes. Here are some tips for safely experiencing the solar eclipse:

  1. Use Proper Eclipse Glasses: Regular sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for viewing the sun. Special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers, must be used. Ensure they meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
  2. Adult Supervision for Children: Ensure that children are supervised when using solar filters or eclipse glasses. Teach them the importance of not removing the glasses while looking at the sun.
  3. Alternative Methods: For those who do not have eclipse glasses, using a pinhole projector is a safe way to view a projection of the eclipse. This can be a fun and educational activity to do with children.
  4. Avoid Unsafe Methods: Do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays can damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.
  5. Check the Weather: If it is cloudy, you may not be able to see the eclipse. Use online resources to watch it live if the weather does not permit outdoor viewing.
  6. View it Safely via Livestream: The eclipse can be viewed via livestream broadcast through the NASA Exploratorium.

We hope these tips are helpful for you and your family to safely experience this spectacular event. For more safety tips and information, please visit https://opto.ca/eye-health-library/solar-eclipse-safety.

March Deep Learning Skill: A Discerning Believer

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we step into March and the reflective season of Lent leading into Easter, our focus shifts towards a deeply spiritual aspect of our curriculum: understanding the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectation of “A Discerning Believer.”

This month, amidst the solemnity and introspection of Lent, students will explore the essence of being a discerning believer through key beliefs:

– Acknowledging God’s omnipresence and the power of faith.

– The significance of prayer, emphasizing communication with God anytime, anywhere.

– Reflecting on the stories of the Bible, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

– Appreciating the Church community, Mass, and the seven Sacraments.

– Understanding the importance of forgiveness and emulating Jesus in our daily lives.

We chose this focus to align with Lent, a time for renewal, hope, and deepening our relationship with God, leading to the celebration of Easter. We encourage you to engage with your child in discussions about faith, prayer, and the lessons of Lent, reinforcing these concepts at home.

Thank you for your support as we walk together during this season of Lent a time of renewal and hope. Your partnership is invaluable in this shared mission of faith education.

Your partner in education,

P. Pizarro
