Weekly Updates ~ April 29-May 3

Good afternoon, Tornado Families!

Congratulations to our Grade 8 students who returned from their retreat on Wednesday without injury and a new appreciation for one another. Let this continue to carry you until June! Today, we remember families impacted on this National Day of Mourning for persons killed or injured in the workplace. We have another virtual presentation for parents on Digital Safety Awareness and Human Trafficking Prevention Education this coming Tuesday. Registration information is below. We usher in May this week and start the month by remembering Jesus’ mother, Mary, at our mass on Thursday. All are welcome to join us at the 10 am mass that day. Next Sunday, some of our students will receive the Sacrament of First Communion. It will also be the kick-off of Catholic Education Week in the province.

The “Guardians of the Game” webinar, hosted virtually on April 9th, was a big success! Our guests were incredibly informative and engaging, and we have received great feedback. Please click on Guardians of the Game Resources FINAL, so families who didn’t attend can still access the resources.

May Deep Learning Skill: Inclusion and Belonging

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As May unfolds at St. Teresa of Avila School, we are proud to dedicate this month to fostering Inclusion and Belonging in our educational journey. This initiative is deeply woven into our commitment to create a learning environment that not only promotes academic excellence but also nurtures a sense of community and mutual respect among all members of our school family.

This month, our students will engage in a series of activities designed to cultivate a culture that recognizes Our students will explore the importance of inclusivity in a welcoming and nurturing environment.

Our focus on Inclusion and Belonging aims to ensure that all students feel valued and are empowered to reach their full potential. We strive to educate our young learners about different cultures, enhancing their understanding and appreciation for the diverse world in which we live. We encourage students to seek out and celebrate diverse perspectives, fostering a rich learning environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Inclusion and Belonging are more than just themes; they are essential pillars of our educational philosophy. We encourage you to engage with your child about their experiences and learnings around these topics, discussing the importance of empathy, kindness, and respect in everyday life. Your involvement is crucial in reinforcing these values and extending our students’ learning experiences beyond the classroom walls.

Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this meaningful journey together. By focusing on Inclusion and Belonging, we are laying the foundation for a more understanding, inclusive, and cohesive community, where every individual is appreciated and empowered.

Your partner in education,

P. Pizarro

Happy Administrative Assistant’s Day!

The staff and students at St. Teresa of Avila School would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the Administrative Assistants today on “Administrative Assistant’s Day”.  YOU are the face of our schools.  The first smile that our students and families see when they come to us.  YOU are the medical expert, giving ice, providing tissues and paper towels, handing out medication and inhalers.  YOU are the mental health experts, calming bodies, minds and hearts with ease.  YOU are the ones that our students go to for everything they need; the ones that all staff go to for everything they need; and the ones that our Administrators go to for everything we need.  YOU are the one.

Behind every successful day at school – however you measure that success – is YOU.  Today, we recognize the sacrifices you make in your personal time, your family time and your lives for the good of the school.  We recognize the dedication you have to your communities and we recognize the challenges that you deal with – with ease.

Today we recognize YOU and the impact that you have on our world. You keep us all going!

THANK YOU, MISS RACINE!!

April Deep Learning Skill: Global Citizenship and Sustainability

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As April dawns at St. Teresa of Avila School, we embrace Earth Month with a special emphasis on Global Citizenship and Sustainability in our educational journey. This initiative is rooted in our commitment to nurturing informed, responsible, and compassionate individuals who understand their impact on the world and are motivated to act in support of all life.

This month, our students will immerse themselves in a range of activities aimed at developing a deep understanding of political, environmental, economic, and social forces. They will explore the intricate ways these forces shape our lives, communities, and the global landscape. By making responsible decisions and taking action, our learners will contribute to a sustainable future for all.

Learning from and with people of different cultures is another vital component of this month’s focus, fostering a sense of global community and mutual respect among our students. Through these engagements, we aim to inspire our young learners to become active participants in local, national, and global communities, contributing positively to society.

Global Citizenship and Sustainability are more than educational themes; they are calls to action for us all. We encourage you to engage with your child on these important topics, discussing how each of us can make a difference in our world. Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this important journey together. By fostering a generation of global citizens and sustainability champions, we are taking steps toward a brighter, more equitable future for everyone.

Dance-A-Thon Tomorrow!!

Thank you to those who have submitted their donations! It’s not too late to place your donations through School Cash Online!

We are a little shy of last year’s donations at the moment so we are hoping that we can make it up tonight!

Remember to submit pledge forms to the office (via the classroom teacher) to receive a tax receipt for the eligible donations. The money raised goes towards items and events for the students. We need to replace classroom recess equipment due to wear and tear and loss. We are slowly replacing the chairs parents sit on during school events as the wooden ones are splintering and breaking. We are still adding to our gym equipment inventory, to name a few initiatives. We’ve had some students ask for Spikeball nets for recess.

Which class will win the pizza party? Which student will raise the most funds overall and win a $50 gift card?

Looking forward to getting our dancing shoes on!

“To celebrate Easter is to believe once more that God constantly breaks into our personal histories, challenging our ‘conventions,’ those fixed ways of thinking and acting that end up paralyzing us. To celebrate Easter is to allow Jesus to triumph over the craven fear that so often assails us and tries to bury every kind of hope.”

– Pope Francis

Happy Easter Monday, Tornado Families!

On Thursday, our grade 7 class, with the help of the grade 3 class and other students, premiered their Passion Play to the school and community in attendance. They captured the true spirit of the moment, and we commend them for their moving performance. Thank you to Madame Baldasaro for directing and Mrs. Hartmann for the costumes. This truly was a passion project!

We hope you are all enjoying a blessed Easter, the holiest of holidays on the Christian calendar, which marks the fulfillment of God’s promise. Rejoice—He is risen! Following Easter Sunday, the season of Easter begins and lasts for seven weeks, ending with Pentecost. It is a time for rejoicing and reflection.

PA Day – April 8

Please note that the Professional Activity (PA) Day, initially set for April 19, 2024, has been rescheduled to April 8, 2024. This adjustment is to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff due to the Total Solar Eclipse expected on April 8, 2024.

It is important to remember that directly observing the Sun can lead to severe eye injuries, particularly during a solar eclipse.

For safe observation of a solar eclipse, it’s essential to use eye protection specifically designed for this purpose (conforming to the ISO 12312-2 standard). Regular sunglasses do not offer adequate protection for your eyes. Moreover, attempting to view any phase of a solar eclipse through the camera of a smartphone, a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without attaching a special solar filter to the front of the device can result in significant eye damage.

Total Solar Eclipse Safety Tips

A total solar eclipse is a rare and exciting natural phenomenon. However, it is crucial to view it safely to prevent any damage to the eyes. Here are some tips for safely experiencing the solar eclipse:

  1. Use Proper Eclipse Glasses: Regular sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for viewing the sun. Special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers, must be used. Ensure they meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
  2. Adult Supervision for Children: Ensure that children are supervised when using solar filters or eclipse glasses. Teach them the importance of not removing the glasses while looking at the sun.
  3. Alternative Methods: For those who do not have eclipse glasses, using a pinhole projector is a safe way to view a projection of the eclipse. This can be a fun and educational activity to do with children.
  4. Avoid Unsafe Methods: Do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays can damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.
  5. Check the Weather: If it is cloudy, you may not be able to see the eclipse. Use online resources to watch it live if the weather does not permit outdoor viewing.
  6. View it Safely via Livestream: The eclipse can be viewed via livestream broadcast through the NASA Exploratorium.

We hope these tips are helpful for you and your family to safely experience this spectacular event. For more safety tips and information, please visit https://opto.ca/eye-health-library/solar-eclipse-safety.
