Weekly Updates ~ June 24-28

Happy Sunday, Tornado Families!

Thank you to all who attended our CSAC BBQ on Tuesday night! Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors who donated their time and prizes (just to clarify – prizes are for the adults). Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for donating burgers and hot dogs and cooking them up. Thank you to Mrs. Langlois and all our performers from the Talent Show. A huge THANK YOU to all the parents and staff who worked so hard as part of our CSAC (Catholic School Advisory Council – Parent Council) this year. We are always looking for new members, and our next meeting will be in September.

On Friday, we held our Play Day in the afternoon, which was a great success! Thank you to Mrs. Jakeman and her grade 6 class for organizing and running the events for our students!

This Tuesday, we will celebrate our grade 8 graduates as they close their elementary school chapter and embark on their high school journey in September! We are so proud of the young people our students have become and of all the great things they will do in the future.

Nutrition for Learning Supply is almost done

Our Nutrition for Learning bins are running dry, so we are asking parents to send their child(ren) with extra snacks this week for when they get hungry (or hangry). Thank you to Mrs. Hamburger for keeping us well-stocked throughout the year.  Nutrition for Learning is a charity so if you wish to donate, click here to find out how: NFL Link

Good-bye and Welcome (Back)

We wish Mr. Walsh a very happy and well-deserved retirement! We will miss your wit and jokes, which brought joy to all of us. At this time, we are unsure who will replace our irreplaceable Mr. Walsh.

We wish Miss Santos, Miss Martin, and Mr. Johnston farewell as they move on to new schools in September. We appreciate all you have done for our school and students and wish you the best of luck.

We welcome Mr. Matic, our new Grade 8 teacher, and Ms. Gribbon-McGraw, our new Grade 4/5 teacher. Ms. Doyle will join us as our school’s Child and Youth Care Worker. Ms. Brubacher will join our school as an Early Childhood Educator now that we have our Extended Day program back in September. We also welcome back Mrs. Brown, who was away this year and is looking forward to seeing her students.

All families who pre-registered for the 2024-2025 Extended Day Program, official registration opened on June 17th. We know there were some glitches with the new system and they are working to fix it. The board will let us know when OneList is up and running again. Stay tuned.

Thinking of Moving?: Please contact the school as soon as possible as we are finalizing our enrolment for next year.  If you are moving, the outgoing and incoming school must be aware so we can prepare.  Thank you! June Deep Learning Skill: Self-Directed Learning

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As June, the final month of the school year, approaches at St. Teresa of Avila C.E.S., we are focusing on the essential Transferable skill of self-directed learning. This involves students taking charge of their learning by setting goals, staying motivated, and reflecting on their progress.

Students will develop a growth mindset, learn to think about their thinking, and build resilience. They will also enhance their emotional intelligence, understand themselves and others better, and cultivate healthy relationships.

Encourage your child to discuss their learning goals and reflect on their progress. Your support is key in reinforcing these values.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Your partner in education,

P. Pizarro

CANCELLED: 3-Pitch Tournament Today

As you are aware, today marks the beginning of a heat wave in the Region of Waterloo. These are the guidelines the board has provided to us for this week.

Extreme Heat: Temperature With or Without Humidex

  • Cooler than 35 C: students may remain outside for all regular outside activities.
  • Between 35 & 40 C: students may remain outside for no longer than 20 minute intervals at a time.
  • Hotter than 40 C: students must remain inside.

Note that sporting events scheduled for this week are subject to this and may be cancelled as a result.

This means that today’s tournaments, and the rest of the week’s interschool events will be cancelled. Unfortunately, due to the timeline of the end of the year approaching, we will not be able to reschedule 14 tournaments, so there are no make-up dates.

Parent/Guardian Math Survey

Dear Families,

Schools offer a variety of opportunities for parents to learn more about how to support their children: for example, events related to mathematics may be held at the school (e.g., family math nights); teachers may provide newsletters or communicate with parents through apps or social media; and school or board websites may provide helpful tips about how parents can engage in their child’s mathematics learning outside of school and may even provide links where they can learn more or enjoy math activities together.

The following brief survey will assist our school district in gathering data about how parents/families feel in terms of being informed about what their children are learning in math, how parents/families feel about supporting their children’s learning in math, and about parental access to math learning resources at home.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation.

https://bit.ly/SupportingMathAtHomeSurvey2024  This survey will remain open until June 14, 2024.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the collection of this information please contact K-12 Mathematics Coordinator, Board Math Lead, Petra LeDuc at petra.leduc@wcdsb.ca , 519-578-3660 extension 2415.

Best,

Weekly Updates ~ June 3-7

Happy Sunday, Tornado Families!

Good luck to our Grade 6 students this week as they participate in EQAO testing. Be proud of your efforts.

We also say “Ciao” to our Colombian exchange students who will be with us until Thursday this week and then head back home.

The month of June is designated as PRIDE season in the Waterloo region and in many communities across Ontario. This month, and each and every month, our Catholic schools are committed to nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected.

As Catholics, we believe that we are wonderfully made in the image and likeness of a God who created us and loves us unconditionally – just as we are. We are called to love and celebrate one another, just as God loves and celebrates each one of us. We honour the inherent dignity in each other by treating one another with care,  compassion, and respect.  We honour the inherent dignity in all of our 2SLGBTAQIA+ staff, students, parents and family members by treating one another with sensitivity, compassion, and respect.

Throughout June across the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, the Progress Flag will fly at each school and board building where it will remain for the month of June. This act of flying the Progress Flag in June affirms publicly our Catholic faith and gospel values of love, inclusion and a belief in the dignity of each person.

June is also National Indigenous History Month. As a community, we have worked throughout the year to deepen our understanding of the role we must take in recognizing our impact on our Indigenous brothers and sisters and our part in promoting truth and reconciliation. Our journey will continue throughout the month.

We are deep in planning for our End of Year Family BBQ on Tuesday, June 18th. This week, you will be able to place your food orders for the BBQ through School Cash Online.

P. Pizarro

How many items does your child(ren) lose yearly to the Lost and Found or, worse yet, goes in the trash? Want to save money by NOT having to replace lost items because no one knows who it belongs to? Get Mabel’s Labels!

We are happy to report that our school signed up for an ongoing fundraiser with Mabel’s Labels. Our school has the opportunity to earn 20% commission on all sales, and you have the peace of mind of knowing that your child(ren)’s items are labelled. And we are thankful that our Lost and Found does not fill up every term.
